Intermediate switch connection and wiring diagram

Intermediate switch An intermediate switch is a switch which permits the control of a lighting point from three positions. In order to control this lighting point from the three positions, the intermediate switch is connected together with two other 2-way switches. Application: it can be used in lighting a room or hall having 3 entrances , it can also be used in long corridors and staircases. We shall be looking at these connections. Direct On Line starting semi automatic method  This is one of the simplest method of starting motors by connecting them directly to the supply using a single contactor. Note that this method is limited in starting motors with power less than 10KW because of the high starting current which is about 4 to 6 times the nominal or rated current. In larger motors the Starting current is so high that it may destroy destroy the windings of the motor. So this starting method should not be used to start motors whose power is greater than 10KW. Other starting methods such as the Star-Delta starting, stator resistance starter, rotor resistance starting, star-delta resistance starting and auto-transformer starting can be used to reduce this high starting current which we shall later see. Teleruptor (Teleswitch) A teleruptor   is an electrical device, which is used to control a lighting point from many positions (3, 4, 5, or more) unlike one way or two way switches. This device has an advantage over an intermediate switch (which can only control a lighting point from only 3 positions). Push buttons are used at the various control points to activate this device which puts on the lamp. We are going to see how to connect this device. Before that, it is very important to know its area of application. Application: The above mentioned advantage, permits this device to be used in: Long corridors, stair case, and halls or rooms with more than 2 entrance. Two way switching | wiring a two way switch

Connection of a two way (double) lighting system A two way lighting system is a system which can control a lighting point from two positions. In the connection of this system, two 2-way switches are required to control the lighting point from the two positions. Let’s now look at how the terminals of the 2 way switch looks like and how it is used.  It has 3 terminals (COM, L1, L2) see the figure below. One switch at position 1 and the other at position 2. From the above diagram, connect the COM of Switch 1 to the live, then L1 and L2 of Switch 1 connected to L1 and L2 of Switch 2. Then connect the COM of switch 2 to one terminal of the lamp and the other terminal of the lamp to the neutral and you are done with the connection.
